Unix / LinuxUnix is a operating system that has been around since the 1970's. The TCP/IP network protocol that runs the Internet was first implemented on Unix and even today it's still going strong and running a large number of the websites around the world. There are commercial variants of Unix for example AIX (created by IBM), and Solaris (created by SUN), but most promising is a open source operating system called Linux. Linux is available for free, but just as important all it's source code is available to view and can be modified if you wish to do so. It is this phylosophy that is gaining popularity and showing great potential for creating software that is open to be used as you wish without the license restrictions associated with other software. Linux Web siteI have a new web site on Linux and in particular Linux Certification with Linux Professional Institute (LPI). The site contains practice exams, tutorials and my Linux blog entries. E-BooksI have written two e-books on the 2 proprietary versions of Unix mentioned above, and I hope to add more Linux information here in the future. These e-Books are in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. If you do not have acrobat installed on your machine then you can download it for free. No charge is made for these but please read the copyright information for each of the books you download. AIX E-bookMy first e-book is on the IBM AIX operating system. The book has been written for AIX Version 4. I now use AIX much less than I did before so I do not expect to update it in future. There are no plans therefore to update it with information on AIX version 5.
Solaris BookshelfMy latest e-book is on the Sun Solaris operating system. This has been split into 3 volumes to make the files easy to manage. These books are still work in progress, although the first is near to completion.
Linux CommandsI have started a list of some useful commands that can be run within a Linux shell. Whilst these should work for most versions of Linux there may be some difference with different variations, particularly with the proprietary Unix operating systems.
SoftwareThis is some software I've made freely available through the GPL
Tutorials / How-To etc.
